Safari lodges provide some of the most reliable accommodation for weary travellers seeking relaxation after a long day of hiking, mountain biking or game driving. While some are not as opulent or extravagant as their luxury safari lodge cousins, safari lodge rooms are clean, comfortable and offer all the modern conveniences one would expect in a hotel or lodge including: en suite bathrooms, hot showers, comfortable beds and solid, non-canvas walls!
The evening is a great way to meet other guests and hear their safari experiences, and you’re sure to meet some interesting folks from all over the world when on safari in Tanzania. There’s nothing better than curling up in a comfortable chair, chilled aperitif in hand, watching the African sun disappear slowly behind the thorny acacias. In the safari lodges, you'll appreciate the ability to partake in many interesting pre-dinner conversations in the lounge area as guests relax and share their photos and day’s adventures. However, don’t be surprised if all conversation ceases for a few glorious moments as other guests join you in watching the sunset.
Mealtime is eagerly awaited, and for good reason. All the lodges have at least one restaurant where the most delicious dishes are prepared - often using local produce and ingredients. All dietary requirements can be met and vegetarians will be pleasantly surprised at the scrumptiously prepared dishes using fresh vegetables and fruits. We try to select lodges that source their food and beverages locally. Not only does it benefit the locals but it also tastes much better! Some of our top picks for safari lodges in the mid range include: Ndutu Safari Lodge- one of our absolute faves. The food alone keeps us coming back, and its proximity to so many amazing game drives makes it a top choice. It's also reasonably priced which makes it a good addition to most itineraries. Plantation Lodge has only a handful of rooms which give it a very cozy feel. Most of the produce is grown at the plantation and the meals are a true gastronomic experience! An outdoor pool area is carefully secluded from the main lodge and provides some respite in the heat of the afternoon. The Plantation Lodge is at the upper end of the spectrum and is definitely worth it! Safari lodges aren’t private so the atmosphere won’t be as intimate as camping or luxury lodges. However, they offer a nice complement to the other options and an excellent way of meeting interesting people from all walks of life. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself sitting next to a famous photographer or celebrity – it can and does happen at safari lodges.
