The beauty of light mobile camping is it allows you to stay in quiet, isolated areas that most tourists would not get to visit. Light mobile camping – what does it mean exactly? As the name suggests, this option is the most versatile and most rugged option. It is also the most cost-effective lodging option as many of the ‘frills’ are omitted. Are you interested in really getting away from it all and fully immersing yourself in the African wilderness? Does the thought of sleeping in a tent near wildebeest or hippos, with only a canvas wall between you and nature, excite you? If you answered ‘yes’ to the questions above then light mobile camping may well be for you. The location is normally where wildlife activity occurs and the exact spot is selected by the guide, who knows the area well and who will select a very private, scenic campsite. And, the best part is that you and your travel companions are the only guests at this camp! Light mobile camping is an excellent way to experience nature up close. After dinner you’ll unwind around a campfire under a canopy of stars and enjoy the sounds of the night. This is truly an amazing experience and is highly recommended for anyone who is ok with sleeping in the middle of the wilderness. Because the tents are located near wildlife, the nights can be noisy, particularly when wildebeest or hippos are about. At night you will undoubted be serenaded by grunting, snorting, breathing, munching and other animal noises. You’ll want to consider this factor as well when deciding on which lodging options are best for you. More about light mobile camping: The tents have dark green canvas and are made of light metal frames, which allow them to be transported easily. They have two side windows and outside flaps and inside closures. The tents are roughly 2.5 m (8.2 ft) by 2.5 m (8.2 ft) and 1.85 m (5.9 ft) high. For beds we bump it up a notch and offer mattresses with cotton linens instead of the standard sleeping bag. This option allows us to have all linens washed and ironed (yes, ironed!) before each safari. Each mattress also comes with a pillow and freshly laundered pillowcase. A wash basin is placed outside each tent so guests can wash up before meals and after long drives. There’s a central toilet area that includes another wash basin and gravity fed, solar-heated shower. These areas are shared by a maximum of four people and are cleaned daily by camp staff. Meals are enjoyed in a central mess tent where guests enjoy home cooked meal with fellow travelers and their guide. When darkness falls, the camp is lit by solar and battery powered lights. Guests are also provided with small lights for their tents. If you are at all interested in camping, we recommend adding light mobile camping to your lodging options. Not only is it cost-effective, but it will also be a truly memorable experience! Light mobile camping is the ideal option for those who wish to get off the beaten path.
