Tanzania camping safari

Tanzania camping safari

A camping safari is the best way to really experience Tanzanian wildlife and to get away from it all.

Are you interested in setting up camp away from the set camp sites? Do dream of being awakened by whooping hyenas and barking jackals? If you are nodding furiously while reading this description, then we strongly suspect this itinerary may be the one for you. The light camping safari is also good as it offers a few nights in lodges, where you will be able to enjoy nice showers and fantastic food, not to mention the company of other fellow safari goers.  We’ve assumed that most guest will land in Kilimanjaro the night prior to their safari and overnight in Arusha. We have the safari starting on the following day. Again, all itineraries can be modified and are merely to get you salivating.

Day 1 - After breakfast you will head to Tarangire national park. The drive from Arusha to Tarangire will take you across Masai step and takes around two to two and a half hours. After lunch you’ll have your first game drive. Tarangire the park is famous for its large number of elephants and big herds of mammals like buffalo, wildebeest and zebras. There are also big cats here. You also have the option to do night drives in Tarangire, which we recommend everyone try at least once! Overnight in Tarangire

Day 2 - Today you will head to Lake Manyara National Park. The drive takes about an hour from Tarangire, and is a great early morning drive. Lake Manyara Park is famous for bird life and the underground water forest is good habitat for baboons. There are big troops of baboons here, larger than in any other park in Africa. Here you can observe hippos near the lake and herds of herbivores on the open area and in the acacia woodlands. In the afternoon you will drive across the rift wall escarpment and across highlands of the Ngorongoro and to the winding road on the rim of the crater heading north to Olmoti Crater.
This camp is located near Nainoka Noka ranger post on the eastern side of Ngorongoro highlands near Olmoti Crater, the highland is about 2200 meters (7218 feet) from sea level and regularly shrouded in mist and low clouds and this is formed by the upward movement of warm air rising from the Tanzania's Indian ocean and rift valley, the air cooling as it ascends the Ngorongoro highlands. These moist conditions have given rise to broad band of evergreen forest which cloaks the eastern rim although the area is only three degrees from the Equator. Complexity of peaks, craters, valleys, plains and lakes made the area one of the wonders as there are few places on earth where such a diversity of landscapes exists in side a region of 828,000 hectares (2,046,033 acres). Resident Masai with their cattle live in harmony with the resident wildlife here. Overnight/light camp near Olmoti crater.

Day 3 - Today you’ll do morning walks in Olmoti Crater. Beautiful views are to be had and this is a good area to learn and see Masai daily activities. You will also see some zebras and antelopes at the distance. Afternoon game viewing on the crater floor. Overnight/Light camp near the Olmoti crater.

Day 4 - You’ll start the day with morning game viewing in the crater and then you’ll visit Olduvai Gorge in afternoon. In the evening, you’ll enjoy some game viewing on the short grass plains of the western Ngorongoro and eastern Serengeti. The migration of the wildebeest is here in January, February and March. The camp is located in acacia woods overlooking Ndutu valley and Lake Ndutu. This is important habitat for species such as elephants, giraffes, antelopes and numerous birds while cheetahs and lions regularly move through the area. Overnight/ light camp near Lake Ndutu or Ndutu lodge.

Day 5 - Game viewing in the woodlands and open grasslands of southern Serengeti there are elephants, buffalo, and antelope all year round, migrating herds of wildebeest and Zebra are here from January to March. Overnight/ light camp near lake Ndutu or Ndutu lodge.

Day 6 - A full day game viewing in central Serengeti. The area is generally flat with rocky outcrops (lion kopjes) and woodlands. The area provides superb game viewing all year round due to permanent water holes on the lines of the Seronera River Valley. Larger mammals like elephants, giraffes, hippos and antelopes are common, it is almost guaranteed to see the elusive leopard here, and big cats like cheetahs and lions are common as well. Overnight/ light camp in Seronera Valley

Day 7
-  A full day of game viewing in central Serengeti. Today you will explore Moru Kopjes and Acacia woodlands northwest of central Serengeti. Overnight/light camp in the Seronera valley.

The afternoon is spent game viewing in Lake Manyara National Park. Overnight at Rhotia valley.
